Perplexity SEO means making sure Perplexity's crawler can reach your pages and giving it clear, current, well-sourced passages worth citing. Perplexity answers nearly every question with numbered source links, so it rewards pages that state facts plainly and can be trusted.

Perplexity describes itself as an answer engine. A person asks a question, Perplexity searches the web, reads the sources it finds and writes a short answer with numbered citations pointing to the pages it used. That design makes citation the whole game. This guide covers what is specific to Perplexity: its two documented crawlers, how to let them in safely, how to write for a citation-first product, how to track visits and how to test. For the broader method, see how to get cited by AI search engines.

How Perplexity works, in plain terms

Perplexity's help center describes the product as one that searches the internet in real time and distils what it finds into a summary in a conversational tone. In practice each answer is assembled in four steps.

  1. It interprets the question, often turning a long, conversational query into several searches.
  2. It retrieves pages from its search index and, where needed, fetches pages live.
  3. It reads and selects passages that answer the question.
  4. It writes the answer with numbered citations that link back to the sources.

Because the answer is built from passages, a page that states its main point clearly near the top of each section is easier to use than one that hides it. How Perplexity ranks and selects sources internally is not published, so any claim that someone has "cracked" it should be treated with caution.

The two Perplexity crawlers

Perplexity publishes its crawler rules in its documentation, and they explain a point that confuses many site owners.

User agentWhat Perplexity says it doesPractical effect
PerplexityBotDesigned to surface and link websites in Perplexity search results. Not used to crawl content for AI foundation modelsAllow it in robots.txt if you want to appear in results
Perplexity-UserSupports user actions: when someone asks a question, it may visit a page to give an accurate answer and link to it. Not used for general crawling or to collect content for trainingBecause a user requested the fetch, it generally ignores robots.txt rules

Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt and permitting requests from its published IP ranges, which it provides as JSON files that are updated regularly. It also says firewalls may need explicit allow rules. Source: Perplexity's documentation on its crawlers.

Let Perplexity in, safely

Step 1: robots.txt

Check that no rule blocks PerplexityBot. A simple allow looks like this.

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

Step 2: your firewall

A web application firewall or CDN bot rule can block the crawler even when robots.txt allows it. Perplexity's documentation describes how to set an allow rule on common platforms by combining the user agent with the published IP ranges. Using both is more secure than the user agent alone, because user agents can be faked. Set up an automated job to refresh the IP lists, since Perplexity says the ranges change.

Step 3: confirm in your logs

Look for the PerplexityBot user agent in your server logs and confirm it is receiving 200 responses on your important pages. If it never appears, ask your host whether bot protection is stopping requests before they reach your logs.

Step 4: check the page itself

Make sure the content is present in the HTML response, not only after scripts run, that the page is not behind a login and that it is not marked noindex if you want it surfaced.

Writing for a citation-first product

Perplexity answers are short, so a citation goes to the page that supplies a usable, specific piece of the answer. These habits help.

State the point first

Under each heading, give the direct answer in the opening sentences, then add support. A reader gets what they need quickly, and so does a system selecting a passage.

Be specific and dated

Replace "prices vary" with "most projects of this kind fall between X and Y, depending on A, B and C, as of this month". Give the date your information was last checked, and update it when it changes.

Name your sources

If you cite a number, say who published it, when, and link to it. A page that shows its evidence is easier to trust and harder to contradict.

Cover the follow-up questions

Perplexity encourages follow-up questions. A page that answers the obvious next question, such as the cost after the definition, or the risks after the benefits, gives the system more reasons to use it in more than one answer.

Show who is behind it

Put a real author, a short bio and a way to contact the business on the page. This is good practice for readers, and a system weighing which of several sources to trust has more to go on.

Offer something an answer cannot replace

Include a calculator, template, dataset or worked example. Visitors who want the real thing click through, even when the summary was enough for others.

Perplexity and publishers: what is reported

Perplexity launched a Publishers' Program in July 2024 that, as reported, shares advertising revenue with partner publishers when their content is cited in answers that carry an ad. It is aimed at media organisations, not at ordinary business sites, so most readers can skip it. We mention it because it shows how Perplexity sees citations as the unit of value. Details of the program change, so check Perplexity's own pages before relying on any terms.

Tracking visits from Perplexity

Perplexity visits usually arrive with a referrer from the Perplexity domain. In Google Analytics 4, open the traffic acquisition report, set the dimension to session source and look for perplexity entries. As with any AI source, volumes are often modest at first, so compare month on month and look at the conversion rate, not only the count. If you see unexpected spikes, check whether a single page was cited in a popular answer.

Also check your server logs for PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User. A visit from Perplexity-User means a person's question led the system to fetch your page, which is a stronger signal than a routine crawl.

How to test your visibility

  1. Build the question list. Write 20 to 40 questions in natural language, covering the whole buying journey and including your category and city.
  2. Ask each question in a fresh session. Use the same wording each month.
  3. Record the citations. Note which sources appear, in order, and whether you are among them.
  4. Open the cited pages. See what they contain that you do not.
  5. Repeat a few questions twice. Variation is normal.
  6. Compare month on month. Look for a change in how often you appear across the whole set.

Perplexity also lets people refine answers with follow-up questions, so test a short chain of follow-ups for your most important topics, such as "how much does it cost" then "what are the alternatives".

What you do not need

  • Special files for Perplexity. Nothing in its crawler documentation requires an llms.txt file or similar. Google says its own Search ignores them.
  • Keyword stuffing. It hurts readability and does not help selection.
  • Fake freshness. Do not change dates without changing the content. Accurate updates help and false ones erode trust.
  • Bulk-bought mentions. Low-quality placements will not make a strong source out of a weak one.
  • Anyone selling a guaranteed citation. Nobody can promise it.

A before-and-after passage

Here is an invented example from a Manchester web design agency, showing how a vague passage becomes a citable one. The subject is a common question: "How long does a small business website take to build?"

Before: "Every project is unique, so timescales vary. We work closely with you to deliver on time and to a high standard, and we will give you a schedule once we understand your needs."

After: "A typical small business website of around ten pages takes six to ten weeks from sign-off to launch with our agency. Timing depends on how quickly you supply content, how many revisions are needed and whether you need custom features such as bookings or online payments. Most delays come from late content, not from the build itself. Last reviewed October 2026."

The second version names the typical case, gives a range, lists the drivers, says where delays usually arise and carries a review date. A system building an answer can lift it. A reader gets the information they wanted. It also commits the agency to a statement it can be held to, which is exactly why you should only write ranges you can honour.

A follow-up chain, and why it matters

People rarely stop at one question. Perplexity makes follow-ups easy, so think in chains. For the same agency, a realistic chain might look like this.

  1. "How long does a small business website take to build?"
  2. "What affects the cost of a small business website?"
  3. "Is it better to use a template or a custom design?"
  4. "How do I compare quotes from different agencies?"
  5. "What should a website contract include?"

If you only answer the first, you appear once. If you have a connected set of pages that answer all five, linked sensibly, you have five chances to be useful, and you present as a coherent source on the topic. Map chains for your three most valuable topics and check each link has an owning page.

Adapting the approach by business type

BusinessWhat Perplexity users askWhat to publish
B2B softwareComparisons, integrations, pricing models, alternativesHonest comparison pages, integration documentation, clear pricing explanations
Local service firmWho is best nearby, what it costs, how long it takesLocal pages with real details, price ranges, process, reviews and credentials

Publisher or educatorExplanations, summaries, up-to-date news and dataClear explainers, dated updates, original data and named experts
Professional servicesRules, deadlines, how-to processes and feesPlain-English guides with official sources linked and dates shown

A freshness routine that does not waste time

Perplexity searches live, so out-of-date pages are a risk for topics that change. Sorting pages by how fast their facts change keeps the work manageable.

Page typeReview rhythmWhat to check
Pricing and offersMonthlyRanges, inclusions, dates
Platform or tool guidesEvery one to three monthsScreenshots, menu names, features, limits
Rules, tax and regulationWhenever the rules change, plus quarterlyOfficial sources and effective dates
Evergreen explainersEvery six to twelve monthsExamples, links and accuracy

Show a real "last reviewed" date and change it only when you have checked or changed the content. If the date moves without a review, you are misleading readers.

A monthly Perplexity report

A one-page report keeps the work visible and honest. Include these items.

  • Access status: whether PerplexityBot appeared in logs, with the response codes it received.
  • Panel results: how many of your questions cited you this month compared with last month, and which new sources appeared.
  • Referral visits: sessions from Perplexity with landing pages and conversion events.
  • Pages changed: the pages you improved, with what you changed.
  • Inaccuracies found: wrong facts and the source of each.
  • Next month: the three highest-value actions.

A firewall walkthrough in plain language

Perplexity's documentation describes allow rules for popular web application firewalls, and the logic is the same across providers. Here it is without the vendor jargon.

  1. Download the current IP lists from the two JSON addresses Perplexity publishes, one for PerplexityBot and one for Perplexity-User.
  2. Create a rule that matches a request only when both conditions are true: the user agent contains the bot's name, and the source IP is in the published list.
  3. Set the rule action to allow, and give it a higher priority than rules that block or challenge bots, so it is evaluated first.
  4. Save an automated job to refresh the IP lists regularly, because Perplexity says they are updated.
  5. Check your logs a few days later to confirm that requests now get 200 responses, and that other unknown bots are still blocked.

Changes can take some time to propagate, so do not judge the result after an hour. If you are not sure how to configure your firewall, ask your host or developer to do it from this list.

The practical message is that the same page can serve all three if it is accessible, clear and trustworthy. The differences are mostly in access and measurement. For the ChatGPT side see how to optimize for ChatGPT search.

Finding the questions people ask Perplexity in your field

Perplexity does not publish a keyword tool, so you build your list from what you already know and what the product shows you.

  • Start with real conversations. Customer emails, sales calls and support tickets contain the questions in the customers' own words.
  • Ask Perplexity itself. Enter a core question and read the related questions it suggests after the answer. Add the useful ones to your list.
  • Use search suggestions elsewhere. Autocomplete and People Also Ask in Google show how people phrase questions.
  • Look at communities. Forums and discussion threads reveal the doubts people have before they buy.
  • Check your own site search. If visitors type questions into your search box, those are questions your pages may not answer.

Group the results by topic and make sure each question has exactly one owning page. Two pages answering the same question compete with each other and weaken both.

Staying on the right side of the line

Whenever a new answer product appears, so do shortcuts. Avoid these.

  • Hidden text or instructions aimed at AI. Text that is invisible to visitors but written for a model is deceptive. It risks being ignored and can breach the policies of search engines.
  • Fabricated authority. Do not invent experts, reviews, awards or statistics. If a system quotes a false claim from your site, you own the harm.
  • Mass-produced pages. Hundreds of near-identical pages for each phrasing of a question add nothing for readers.
  • Misleading comparisons. A "best provider" page that always puts the publisher first with no criteria will not earn trust from readers or from systems that weigh credibility.

The sustainable approach is dull and effective: be accurate, be specific, show your sources and keep pages current.

What to do when an answer gets you wrong

If Perplexity states something incorrect about your business, resist the urge to argue with the product. Follow a short process.

  1. Capture the question, the answer and the cited sources, with the date.
  2. Identify which cited page supplied the wrong fact. It may be your own old page or a third-party listing.
  3. Correct the source. If it is your page, update it and show the review date. If it is another site, ask the owner to fix it.
  4. Publish a clear, current page that states the correct fact, such as a pricing or services page.
  5. Re-test after several weeks. Some systems also provide a way to give feedback on an answer, and it is worth using for serious errors.

Common mistakes

  • Blocking PerplexityBot with a broad robots.txt rule or an overzealous firewall.
  • Assuming robots.txt controls Perplexity-User, which Perplexity says generally ignores it.
  • Writing long introductions before the answer.
  • Giving vague ranges and no dates.
  • Leaving out sources for statistics.
  • Treating a single answer as proof of success or failure.
  • Copying competitors' pages instead of adding something original.

A 30-day plan

WeekAction
1Check robots.txt and the firewall for PerplexityBot. Confirm fetches in your logs
2Build the question list and run the first test. Set up a Perplexity view in GA4
3Upgrade three pages: direct answers, dated facts, named sources, and one original element each
4Re-run the test, compare with the baseline and choose the next three pages

A closing reminder

Perplexity's documentation will change over time, so bookmark its crawler page and check it when you update your robots.txt or firewall rules. A five-minute check each quarter can prevent a silent block from undoing your hard work.

FAQ

Your questions, answered in plain English

Perplexity SEO is the work of letting Perplexity's crawler reach your pages and giving it clear, current, well-sourced passages worth citing. It builds on normal SEO and adds access checks, citation-friendly writing and monthly testing.

PerplexityBot is Perplexity's crawler. Perplexity says it is designed to surface and link websites in Perplexity search results and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models.

Perplexity-User supports user actions. When someone asks a question, Perplexity may visit a page to give an accurate answer and link to it. Perplexity says it generally ignores robots.txt because a user requested the fetch.

If you want to appear in Perplexity results, yes. Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt and permitting requests from its published IP ranges.

Perplexity says Perplexity-User generally ignores robots.txt rules because a person requested the fetch. If you need to restrict access, use other controls such as authentication or firewall rules, and consider the trade-off with visibility.

Create an allow rule that combines the user agent with the IP ranges Perplexity publishes in its JSON files, and refresh the lists regularly. Using both is safer than user agent alone, since user agents can be faked.

Perplexity searches the web in real time, reads what it finds and writes an answer with numbered citations. It does not publish its source-selection method, so treat claims of a proven formula with caution.

In Google Analytics 4, use the traffic acquisition report with session source as the dimension and look for Perplexity. Check server logs for PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User, and compare conversions, not only visit counts.

Clear explainers, comparisons, step-by-step guides, original research, pricing pages and current news summaries tend to suit the questions people ask. This is practitioner experience, not a published Perplexity rule.

Perplexity says PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User are not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. Review Perplexity's current documentation for any change, since policies can be updated.

Nothing in Perplexity's crawler documentation lists it as a requirement, and Google says its Search ignores such files. It is optional and should not be expected to change your results.

Common causes are blocked crawlers, content hidden behind scripts or logins, vague pages with no sources, or stronger competing pages. Check access and logs first, then compare your pages with the sources that are cited.

Monthly is enough for most businesses. Use the same 20 to 40 questions in fresh sessions, record the citations and look for patterns across the set, since single answers vary.

Perplexity launched a Publishers' Program in July 2024 that, as reported, shares advertising revenue with partner publishers when their content is cited in answers carrying an ad. It is aimed at media organisations. Check Perplexity's own pages for current terms.

It depends on whether your buyers use it. Because the same accessible, clear, sourced pages help across Google, ChatGPT and Perplexity, the extra work is mostly access checks and testing, so it is usually low cost to include.
